The Asia Media Summit, which took place in Kuala Lumpur from May 9 to 11, 2005, turned out to a global summit in Asia, gathering over 400 delegates from broadacasting organisations of more than 50 countries from Asia-Pacific, Africa, Europe, North America and the Arab world. As a conclusion to the Summit, final recommendations were handed over to Dr. Shashi Tharoor, Under Secretary General of the United Nations, for transmissiom to the 2nd phase of World Summit on the Information Society (Tunis, Novemeber 2005). The Asia Summit's recommendations include the following :
We recommend that broadcasters be encouraged to
- define and adopt quality standards that include guidelines governing their programme standards and editorial practices
- establish systems for the internal and external monitoring of these standards and practices in relation to the guidelines and the legislation under which the broadcasting organizations are established.
